Yes—but the demand is uneven.
See lessIf you’re thinking of offering local SEO services in Nigeria, it’s important to separate two questions:
Do Nigerians search for local businesses online?
Are Nigerian businesses willing to pay for local SEO?
The answer to the first is yes, though it varies by industry.
People still search for things like:
“Mechanic near me”
“Hospital in Port Harcourt”
“Hotel in Abuja”
“Restaurant near me”
“Dentist in Lagos”
“POS agent near me”
“Real estate agent in Enugu”
These searches happen on Google and Google Maps every day. However, many Nigerians also discover businesses through:
WhatsApp
Facebook
Instagram
TikTok
Recommendations from friends
Jiji and other marketplaces
So local search is not the only discovery channel, unlike in some Western countries.
The bigger challenge is the business side.
Many small businesses in Nigeria:
Don’t understand what local SEO is.
Don’t have a website.
Expect instant results.
Prefer spending on Facebook or Instagram ads because they see leads immediately.
This means that selling “Local SEO” as a standalone service can be difficult.
Where demand is strongest is among businesses that rely on customers from a specific location, such as:
Hospitals and clinics
Hotels and short-let apartments
Restaurants
Law firms
Real estate agencies
Auto repair workshops
Schools
Salons and spas
Gyms
Event centres
These businesses can benefit significantly from appearing in Google’s local results.
If you’re considering this as a business
Instead of marketing yourself as a “Local SEO Specialist,” position yourself as someone who helps businesses get more customers from Google.
For example, offer packages that include:
Google Business Profile setup and optimisation
Local SEO
Review management
Basic website creation
WhatsApp integration
Google Maps optimisation
Business owners understand “more customers” much better than “SEO.”
Is it a good business in Nigeria?
Yes, but it’s probably not the easiest digital service to sell on its own.
If I were ranking digital services by current demand in Nigeria, I’d put them roughly like this:
Meta (Facebook/Instagram) Ads
Website development
Google Business Profile optimisation
Local SEO
General SEO for content-heavy websites
Local SEO is particularly effective when bundled with services that produce visible business results.
If your goal is to build a freelance or agency business, I think Google Business Profile optimisation plus local SEO is a stronger offering than local SEO alone. It has less competition in Nigeria than social media marketing, and businesses can often see tangible improvements—such as more calls, direction requests, and enquiries—within a relatively short period when executed well.
