Are Nigerian Bank Stocks Shariah-Compliant for Muslim Investors?

AS a Muslim and I want to make sure my investments are Shariah-compliant. Are Muslims permitted to invest in conventional banks such as Zenith Bank, GTCO, Access Holdings, and UBA? If not, what exactly makes their shares non-permissible?

Also, is Jaiz Bank permissible for Muslim investors? And are there any other Nigerian bank stocks that are considered Shariah-compliant?

Please explain based on Islamic finance principles and, if possible, recognized Shariah standards rather than just personal opinion.

Once upon a time in the village, Mama Ngozi, who sold tomatoes, had a son named Musa, who was a hardworking young man and also a Muslim. Musa wanted to invest his money in a way that was in line with his faith, so he asked Mama Ngozi if bank stocks were Shariah-compliant for Muslim investors like him.

Now, Mama Ngozi, being a wise woman, knew a thing or two about investments and Shariah-compliance. She shared with Musa that in Islam, certain rules called Shariah govern financial transactions. One rule is that Muslims should not earn interest (riba) or invest in businesses that are not Halal.

When it comes to Nigerian bank stocks like Zenith Bank, GTCO, Access Holdings, and UBA, Mama Ngozi explained that conventional banks typically earn a significant portion of their income from interest-based activities, which may not align with Shariah principles. This interest income makes their shares non-permissible for Muslim investors seeking Shariah-compliant investments.

On the other hand, Mama Ngozi shared that Jaiz Bank is an example of a Nigerian bank that operates based on Islamic financial principles, making it permissible (Halal) for Muslim investors. Jaiz Bank offers Shariah-compliant products and services, such as profit-sharing agreements (Mudarabah) and cost-plus financing (Murabahah), which adhere to Islamic finance rules.

Mama Ngozi also mentioned that beyond Jaiz Bank, there are other Nigerian bank stocks considered Shariah-compliant, such as TAJBank, a non-interest bank, and SunTrust Bank, which operate based on Islamic finance principles, making them suitable for Muslim investors looking to invest in line with Shariah guidelines.

In conclusion, Mama Ngozi advised Musa to consider investing in Shariah-compliant financial instruments like Jaiz Bank, TAJBank, or SunTrust Bank to ensure that his investments align with his faith and values. By choosing Halal investments, Musa could grow his wealth while staying true to his religious beliefs.
