The first step is to contact a stockbroker registered with the Nigerian Exchange and request a verification of the shares. The broker can check the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) records and confirm the shareholder’s details with the company’s registrar. The shareholder may need to provide valid identification, a CSCS account number, and relevant transaction records. If the 100,000 units are confirmed, the records can be reconciled to ensure the shares are correctly credited to the owner’s account. If there is any mismatch, it should be resolved with the broker and registrar before any transfer or sale is attempted. This process helps protect the investment and prevent ownership disputes.

In Nigeria, all shares on NGX are now electronic — warehoused at CSCS. But many people still have old paper certificates or bought shares years ago with no CSCS account.

Verification with the Registrar is how you prove those shares are yours and move them into your CSCS account so you can sell or get dividends.

This is the process — it’s called dematerialization / regularization:

    1. You start with your stockbroker
You can’t go straight to CSCS. You need a broker (e.g. CardinalStone, Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers, ARM Securities). The broker opens a CSCS account for you if you don’t have one.

    You’ll fill:
    Share transfer / demat form
    Signature verification mandate

    2. Registrar verifies ownership
The Registrar for that company (e.g. DataMax for Dangote, First Registrars for FirstBank, CardinalStone Registrars for many companies) does the checks:

Compares signature on your old share purchase form vs signature on your verification form — this is the main check
Checks certificate number, name, number of units
If signature has changed, they ask for Bankers Confirmation letter — your bank confirms your signature and identity
For multiple names or lost certificates, they ask for valid ID, affidavit, and sometimes newspaper publication

    3. CSCS crediting
    Once the Registrar confirms:
The registrar confirms to your broker
Broker sends request to CSCS, an account is created in your name, and shares are deposited into your CSCS account
Transaction takes up to 3 working days to reflect

After that, shares are no longer paper — they’re electronic under CSCS.

    4. If you don’t know what you own?
You can do a Global Search:

CSCS holds every listed share. A search checks every brokerage and registrar for shares in your name. Services like CardinalStone Registrars Global Search or Shares Saver charge ~N10k to scan all registrars.
You provide all name variants you may have used — Registrar will try to identify holdings in those names if you prove ID

    Documents you typically need
Original share certificate (or affidavit for loss)
Valid ID (NIN, passport, driver’s license)
    Passport photo
    Specimen signature
    Bank details for e-dividend
CSCS account number / Clearing House Number (CHN). Thank you.
