2. Content:- How to make them stop and watch. Learn – Short video (CapCut), Canva design, Copywriting (how to write captions that sell).
3. Closing:- How to make them pay. Learn – WhatsApp selling, DM script, follow-up.
Where to learn FREE with small data:-
– Google Digital Garage – Certificate in Fundamentals of Digital Marketing. Free certificate, 40 hours. Start here.
– HubSpot Academy – Free course on Content Marketing and Sales. Very practical.
– YouTube:- Search “CXL sales closing script” and “Facebook ads for small business 2025”. Don’t watch 100 videos. Watch 1 expert and practice.
STEP 2: Practice While in School (This is how you make money)
Don’t wait till you “graduate from University or higher institution.” Use your campus as your market. Here are 4 hustles you can start this week:
HUSTLE 1: Manage Instagram for Businesses Around You (Best for you)
Go to that boutique, hair vendor, food seller, or tutorial center near your school. Say: “I will help you post 3 times a week and reply your DMs and bring customers. Pay me ₦30k – ₦50k monthly.”
They ALL need it. You need just 2-3 clients to make ₦100k as a student. You learn content + closing.
HUSTLE 2: Affiliate Marketing / Sales Closer
Find a big vendor on Instagram selling wigs, sneakers, courses. Tell them: “Let me close sales for you on WhatsApp, give me 10-15% commission per sale.” You use the closing skill. No capital needed. One sale of ₦40k wig = ₦4k-₦6k for you.
HUSTLE 3: TikTok + WhatsApp Mini Agency
Create a TikTok page reviewing student products: best power bank, best hostel, best food spot in your school. Put your WhatsApp link in bio. Businesses will pay you to review them. Students will buy through you.
HUSTLE 4: Freelance on Upwork/Fiverr
After 2 weeks of practice, create a Fiverr gig: “I will set up Facebook ad for small business” or “I will write sales captions”. Charge $20. Many Nigerians are making dollars from this.
A easy Roadmap for you as a student:
Week 1-2: Finish Google Digital Garage (2 hrs per day). Learn Canva + CapCut on phone.
Week 3:- Pick ONE skill to sell – I recommend WhatsApp Sales Closer + Instagram Management. It’s fastest cash for students.
Week 4:- DM 20 businesses in your school area. Offer 1 week free trial. Get 1 client.
The Real Formula:-
Digital Marketing = Attention. Sales Closing = Money.
If you can bring attention (with TikTok/IG) and you can close (on WhatsApp), you will never be broke, even as a student.
Don’t learn to be a “digital marketer” – learn to bring one shop 10 extra customers this month. Do it for free, get testimonial video, use it to charge the next 3 shops.
Start with what you have – your phone, 2GB data, and your business admin knowledge. That is enough.

Start learning one skill at a time, practise by helping small businesses around you. 1. First understand what digital marketing actually involves
Digital marketing is much broader than just posting on Facebook.
As a beginner, focus on these 6 skills:
Social media management — managing Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp Business, etc.
Content creation — creating posts, flyers, videos, captions and promotional materials.
Copywriting — writing words that persuade people to buy.
Social media advertising — running Facebook/Instagram ads.
SEO — helping businesses appear when people search on Google.
Analytics — understanding what is working and what isn’t.
You don’t need to master all six immediately.
My recommendation for a student
Start with:
Social Media Management + Content Creation + Copywriting + Meta Ads
These can be turned into freelance services relatively quickly.
2. Where should you learn online?
You can start without spending a lot of money.

This is extremely important.
You can watch 100 hours of YouTube videos and still have no skill that somebody will pay you for.
Use this formula:
Learn → Practise → Build portfolio → Find clients → Get paid → Improve
For example, after learning how to manage an Instagram business account, don’t just move to another lesson.

4. Use your school as your first marketplace
This is where I think you have a major advantage.
You are already surrounded by potential customers.
Look around your campus.
You will find:

Barbers
Hairdressers
Food vendors
Phone/accessory sellers
Makeup artists
Photographers
Tailors
Tutors
Event planners
Small restaurants
POS businesses
Student entrepreneurs
Accommodation businesses
Printing businesses
Many of them may have good products but poor online marketing.
That is your opportunity.
5. Your first hustle could be “Social Media Manager”
Suppose a student sells sneakers.
You approach the person and say:
“I noticed your business is good, but your social media page isn’t being used to its full potential. I’m learning digital marketing and I’d like to help you improve your online presence.”
You could offer:

6. Learn Canva very well
For a student, Canva is one of the most useful tools to learn.
Learn how to create:

Instagram stories
Business cards
Product catalogues
Event posters
Presentation graphics
Social media advertisements
You don’t have to become a professional graphic designer.
You need to become good enough to produce clean, professional marketing materials.
7. Learn CapCut too
Short-form video is extremely important.
Learn to make:
TikTok videos
Instagram Reels
Product videos
Promotional videos
Talking-head videos
Before/after videos
Educational videos
A small business owner may say:
“I don’t know how to make videos.”
You can respond:
“I can help you create short promotional videos for your business.”
That’s another service you can sell.
8. Learn WhatsApp Business
Don’t underestimate WhatsApp in Nigeria.
Learn:
Business profile
Catalogue
Automated greetings
Quick replies
Status marketing
Customer follow-up
Broadcasts
Product presentation
Customer segmentation
You could eventually offer a service called:
“WhatsApp Business Setup for Small Businesses.”
9. Build your own portfolio before looking for clients
Create a simple portfolio containing perhaps 5 sample businesses.
For example:

Phone/accessories business
For each one, create:
Business profile → Content → Captions → Advertisement → Marketing strategy

You don’t need to wait for a real client to create your first portfolio.
10. How to get your first paying client
Start with people you already know.
Step 1
Identify 20 businesses around you.
Step 2
Look at their social media pages.
Step 3
Find problems.
For example:
They haven’t posted in three weeks.
Their pictures aren’t attractive.
They don’t have a proper Instagram bio.
They don’t use WhatsApp Business.
Their captions don’t encourage people to buy.
Step 4
Contact the owner.
Don’t simply say:
“I am a digital marketer. Do you need my service?”
Instead say:
“I looked at your business page and noticed three things that could help you attract more customers online.”
Then show them what you can improve.
That’s much more persuasive.
11. Your Business Administration degree gives you an advantage
This is where you can become different from someone who only learned how to design flyers.
Study these alongside digital marketing:
Marketing → Understand customers.
Accounting → Understand business finances.
Economics → Understand markets.
Entrepreneurship → Understand business creation.
Organizational behaviour → Understand people.
Business communication → Communicate professionally.
Then combine everything:
Business Administration + Digital Marketing + Sales + Data Analysis
That can become a very powerful career combination.

Even 7–10 hours per week can make a substantial difference over a year if you consistently practise.
