How do you verify if an investment company is licensed or a scam in Nigeria before investing?

That’s exactly the question one of my followers asked me today:
And honestly…
this is one of the most important financial literacy questions any Nigerian can ask.
Because many people are not losing money because investment is bad…
They are losing money because they do not understand how investment works.
Now as your Financial Literacy Advocate…
Let me break this down in the simplest way possible.
Imagine Mama Ngozi that sells tomatoes in the village.
One day…
somebody comes to Mama Ngozi and tells her:
“Bring your ₦500,000.
I will give you 40% return every month.”
Immediately…
Mama Ngozi becomes excited.
Why?
Because greed naturally makes people stop thinking deeply.
Now listen carefully.
Any investment promising extremely high guaranteed returns is already a RED FLAG.
Why?
Because real investment does not work like magic.
Investment follows economic realities.
It follows:
– inflation rate
– interest rate
– market condition
– business performance
– risk level
Now let me explain something very important.
There is a difference between:
FIXED INTEREST INVESTMENTS
and
NON-FIXED INVESTMENTS.
This is where many Nigerians get confused.
For example:
Treasury Bills,
Commercial Papers,
FGN Savings Bonds…
these are mostly FIXED INTEREST investments.
Meaning:
the return is already known from the beginning.
Now hear me carefully.
Even these regulated fixed-income investments rarely offer crazy returns above 20%.
So if somebody is promising:
40%,
50%,
100% guaranteed return…
Please use your brain.
That is already suspicious.
Now let’s talk about another category.
Investments like:
Money Market Mutual Funds,
Equity Funds,
Stocks,
Balanced Funds…
these ones are NOT fixed.
Meaning:
the return changes based on market conditions.
That is why no genuine fund manager will guarantee unrealistic profits.
A real investment company understands risk.
Only scammers promise certainty without risk.
Now let me show you the MOST IMPORTANT way to verify any investment company in Nigeria.
Very simple.
Check whether they are licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Yes.
SEC Nigeria.
That is the major regulatory body controlling investment activities in Nigeria.
Think of SEC as the referee of the investment industry.
They monitor:
– investment companies
– stockbrokers
– fund managers
– mutual fund operators
– capital market activities

But..IKING.. why is SEC registration important?
Because licensed companies are monitored regularly.
They submit reports.
They have compliance officers.
SEC watches their activities.
So if anything suspicious starts happening…
SEC can step in immediately.
That is why you hardly hear properly regulated investment companies disappearing overnight with people’s money.
But most Ponzi schemes?
Go and check properly.
Most of them are NOT licensed by SEC.
Now let me show you exactly how to verify.
Very simple.
Go to Google and type:
“SEC Nigeria”
or
“Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria.”
When you enter their website:
– Click “For Investors”
– Scroll down
– Click “Find Registered Operator”
LINK: https://sec.gov.ng/for-investors/find-a-registered-operator/
– Then search the company name
Simple.
If the company is not there…
that is already another red flag.
But wait oooh…
there is another important thing many Nigerians do not know.
Sometimes…
you may search for a company name and not find it immediately.
That does NOT automatically mean the company is fake.
Why?
Because many companies use different TRADING NAMES.
Let me explain.
For example…
some companies may have:
– one legal registered name
– another public app name
The name you see on the mobile app may not be the exact legal licensed name.
That is why before searching…
you must first verify the company’s LEGAL NAME.
Now where can you find the legal name?
Very simple.
Visit their official website.
Then scroll to the very bottom.
That bottom part of a website is what we called “FOOTER” in Website Design.
And…
Most licensed companies usually write their full legal registered name there.
That is the exact name you should search on SEC website.
EXAMPLE:
Platform like Investnaija is a Trading Name for their Stock Brokerage and Asset Management… While Chapel Hill Denham is their Legal name which is Licenced by the Security and Exchange Commission.
Now hear me carefully.
The goal of financial literacy is not to make you fear investment.
No.
The goal is to help you INVEST INTELLIGENTLY.
Because money without knowledge is dangerous.
And that’s why I founded Fokona to democratise and localise financial literacy in Nigeria and across Africa.
Because…Many Nigerians are not poor because they lack opportunities.
Many are poor because they trust blindly without verification.
Now let me say something honestly.
Before you invest your hard-earned money anywhere…
always ask yourself:
– Is this company licensed?
– Is the return realistic?
– Do I understand how the business works?
– Is this investment regulated?
– Can I verify them independently?
Because one simple verification today can save you years of regret tomorrow.
