Set record straight for CSCS & chn numbers

I got an answer here stating that CSCS can be multiple, based on the number of brokers you have, but chn remains one in the stock market. I’m asking, if it’s true, why will bamboo and investnaija could create different chn numbers for me?

The rule for how CSCS identity works in the Nigerian stock market comes down to a fundamental distinction: a person is meant to have only one CHN, but can have multiple CSCS Member Account Numbers across different brokers.

If digital platforms like Bamboo and InvestNaija ended up creating two different CHNs for you, it is due to an onboarding automated gap, not because the rule allows it.

The Correct Terminology: CHN vs. CSCS Account Number
To clear up the confusion, here is how the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) architecture is actually structured:

CHN (Clearing House Number): Your master investor ID in the Nigerian capital market (like a BVN for stocks).
Only 1 per individual. It tracks your total identity across the CSCS registry.

CSCS Account Number (Sub-Account): The specific trading account number assigned to you under a specific broker.
Multiple. One unique account number for every brokerage firm/app you use.

Let me Easy Explanation to This:- - CHN = Your ONE Identity in the whole Nigerian Stock Market. - CSCS Account Number = Your account number with ONE broker. Let me Easy Explanation to This:-
    – CHN = Your ONE Identity in the whole Nigerian Stock Market.
    – CSCS Account Number = Your account number with ONE broker.

    Think of it like this:-
    – CHN is like your BVN. You are Julius Uchenna, you have only ONE BVN in all banks in Nigeria. Your one identity in the whole of Nigeria Stock Market
    – CSCS Number is like your Account Number. You can have a GTB account number, First Bank account number, Kuda account number. All different, but all linked to your ONE BVN.

    So in the stock market:
    – You should have ONE CHN for life.
    – But you can have 5 different CSCS numbers if you have 5 brokers (e.g., one with Bamboo, one with InvestNaija, one with Stanbic IBTC, one with Meristem).

Now Your back to your Main Question: Why did Bamboo and InvestNaija give you different CHN ?

Because they made a mistake, and it happens to 90% of Nigerians. Here is why:-

    1. Bamboo and InvestNaija are NOT direct brokers:- They are apps that use other big brokers behind them. Bamboo uses Lambeth, InvestNaija uses another. When you opened the two apps, you probably used slightly different details.

    Example:
    – On Bamboo you wrote: “JULIUS UCHENNA”
    – On InvestNaija you wrote: “Julius Uchenna Chukwu”

The CSCS computer saw two different names and created two different CHN for you. If your BVN, phone number, or date of birth didn’t match 100%, it will create new CHN.

    2. In a perfect system, you should have ONE CHN. Even if you have 10 brokers, your CHN should remain the same. That is how you can see all your stocks in one place.

    What You Should Do Now:

If You have two CHN now – that’s called “Multiple CHN” and it’s a problem. You need to merge them.

Step 1:- Check your two CHN numbers. Write them down.
Step 2:- Email both Bamboo and InvestNaija support. Tell them: _”Please harmonize my CHN, I have multiple CHN, my BVN is X, please merge to one CHN.”_
Step 3:- Always use the EXACT same name, same BVN, same DOB when you open any investment app.

If you don’t merge it, when you want to sell or transfer stocks, CSCS will say your name does not match.

You are supposed to have ONE CHN only. Bamboo and InvestNaija gave you two because your details didn’t match 100% – go and merge them to one.

Mama Ngozi, let’s clear the air about CSCS and CHN numbers, so even Grandma in the village will nod her head in understanding.

Now, imagine Mama Ngozi, who sells her fresh tomatoes in the market every day. CSCS is like a big bowl where Mama Ngozi keeps her tomatoes safe. This bowl helps her keep track of all her tomatoes, so she knows which ones belong to her.

In the stock market, CSCS works like Mama Ngozi’s bowl, but for shares instead of tomatoes. It helps keep track of the shares you own from different companies.

Now, CHN numbers are like Mama Ngozi’s special marker for each type of tomato she sells. Every type of tomato has a different marker to show which is which. In the stock market, the CHN number is your unique marker for the shares you own.

So, why did Bamboo and InvestNaija give you different CHN numbers? Well, just like different types of tomatoes need different markers, different brokers may use a different system for assigning CHN numbers. It’s like if Mama Ngozi had two different markers for her tomatoes – one for the big ones and another for the small ones.

In the end, both the CSCS and CHN numbers are there to keep your shares safe and organized, just like Mama Ngozi keeps her tomatoes in check. So, even if the CHN numbers from different brokers may look different, they still help you identify and keep track of your shares in the stock market.

The confusion comes from mixing up CSCS account/CHN with the broker or investment platform you use.

Your CHN (Clearing House Number) is your unique investor identification within the Nigerian capital market. However, when you invest through different brokers or platforms such as Bamboo or InvestNaija, they may have different account or investor identifiers linked to their respective brokerage arrangements.

So seeing different numbers on different platforms does not automatically mean you have multiple CHNs in the way you would have multiple brokerage accounts.

The safest way to confirm exactly what each number represents is to check the account details with the specific broker/platform and, if necessary, confirm your CHN directly through CSCS or your registered broker.

In short: different platforms can show you different identifiers; don’t assume every number labelled “CHN” is necessarily a different CSCS identity.
