Deep inside a small village in Nigeria, there was Mama Ngozi, a hardworking tomato seller loved by all for her wisdom and practical advice. One day, Mr. Emeka, a young man from the village, approached Mama Ngozi with a question about trusted investments in Nigeria.

Mr. Emeka asked Mama Ngozi, “Mama Ngozi, which investment can I trust that has done well over the years on balance fund?”

With a warm smile, Mama Ngozi began to explain in a way that everyone in the village could easily understand:

“Ah, my dear Mr. Emeka, when it comes to investing, there is something called a balanced fund. Just like when you carefully balance the veggies on your tray to make sure they don’t fall off, a balanced fund also carefully puts together different types of investments to reduce risks.”

She continued, “In Nigeria, one trusted option that has performed well over the years is what we call a Mutual Fund. Imagine you and many other villagers coming together to contribute money into a pot managed by knowledgeable gardeners called Fund Managers. These fund managers then plant this money into a variety of crops like stocks, bonds, and other investments.”

Mama Ngozi further explained, “The beauty of a balanced mutual fund is that even if one crop doesn’t do well, the others will help support the entire farm. It’s like saying if one type of vegetable doesn’t grow well this season, you still have a variety of others to rely on.”

She advised Mr. Emeka, “Before investing in a balanced fund or any mutual fund, make sure to check the history of the fund, see how it has performed over the years, and also understand the fees involved.”

And with a nod of understanding, Mr. Emeka thanked Mama Ngozi for her insightful explanation and went on his way, feeling more knowledgeable about trusted investments in Nigeria.

Before choosing a “best” balanced fund, remember that balanced funds combine equities and fixed-income investments, so their returns can be higher than money-market funds over the long term, but they also carry more volatility.

3 balanced funds worth researching in Nigeria

    1. Stanbic IBTC Balanced Fund — A well-established option to research if you want a combination of equities and fixed-income assets. Compare its long-term performance and fees rather than looking only at the current return.

    2. ARM Discovery Balanced Fund — Another established fund manager worth comparing, particularly if you want diversified exposure rather than investing directly in individual shares. ARM Capital Partners is listed by the SEC as an active fund/portfolio manager.

    3. United Capital Balanced Fund — Worth putting on your comparison list because of its diversified balanced-fund approach. Before investing, check its latest factsheet for asset allocation, 3–5 year performance, fees and risk.

What to know first: Don’t ask only “Which fund gives the highest return?” Ask “What is the fund investing in, what has it returned over 5 years, what are the fees, and how much can I tolerate losing when the market falls?” Also verify the fund manager’s current SEC registration before investing.

*Past performance does not guarantee future returns.*
