It’s tight, but it works if we treat it like a business budget.

The secret: Pay yourself FIRST, then survive on what’s left

    1. The 50/30/20 Rule – Adapted for ₦80k

    1. NEEDS ….. Survive 50%…. ₦40,000 … Rent portion, Food, Transport, NEPA, Data .

    2. WANTS + FAMILY 30% …. ₦24,000 …Support family, Airtime, Outings, Clothes .

    3. FUTURE – Save + Invest 20% …₦16,000 …MMF + Stocks + Skills.

    ₦40,000 – NEEDS
    1. Food: ₦15,000 → ₦3,750/week. Cook at home. Rice, beans, eggs, garri, vegetables
    2. Transport: ₦10,000 → ₦2,500/week. Use bus/BRT, trek short distances
    3. Rent + NEPA + Water: ₦10,000 → Save monthly for yearly rent. Live with roommates if possible
    4. Data + Airtime: ₦5,000

    ₦24,000 – WANTS + FAMILY SUPPORT
    1. Family Support: ₦15,000 → Fixed. Send on the 1st. When it’s done, it’s done
    2. Flex/Outing/Emergency: ₦9,000 → This covers haircut, outing, unexpected bills

    ₦16,000 – FUTURE FUND. THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE
This is how you escape ₦80k salary.

    ₦8,000 | MMF – Stanbic, AIICO, OWealth @ 20% Emergency fund + School fees.
₦5,000 |Stocks/ETF – NGX 30 ETF, Mtn.. NB etc… Long term wealth. Buy monthly
₦3,000 Skills – Courses, YouTube Premium, Data for Excel course Increase salary to ₦200k+

    Survival Hacks on ₦80k

    1. The “Envelope Method”: As salary drops, pay yourself by investing

    2. Cook ….. cooking low cost than eating at restaurant

    3. Side Hustle …..learn skills outside from work.

Avoid Debt Traps: No loan apps. No “buy now pay later”.

    Bottom Line
    ₦80k is not small. It’s a seed.
Survive on 50%, Love family with 30%, Build future with 20%..

    I hope this helps.

Let’s break it down in simple Nigerian terms. 1. Capital Market vs Money Market - The 2 Big Markets A. MONEY MARKET = "Safe + Short Term" Section Goal: Keep money safe + earn interest. Let’s break it down in simple Nigerian terms.

    1. Capital Market vs Money Market – The 2 Big Markets

    A. MONEY MARKET = “Safe + Short Term” Section
Goal: Keep money safe + earn interest. For 1 day to 1 year.

    What you buy there….
    1. Treasury Bills….. FG borrows from you for 91/182/364 days. ~20-22% in 2026
    2. Money Market Mutual Funds (MMF)…pool money to buy T-Bills. You can withdraw anytime. 15-22%
    3. Commercial Paper… – Big companies like Dangote borrow for 90 days
    4. Savings Account….Bank @ 2-5%

Risk…. Very Low….. Safe because it’s manage by professionals

    B. CAPITAL MARKET ….Growth + Long Term” Section
Goal……Grow money big over 5-20 years.

    What you buy there….
    1. Stocks/Shares….. You own a small piece okomuoil, NB, MTNN, GTCO. You get dividends + price growth
    2. Bonds…..FG or big companies borrow from you for 3-10 years. 15-18%. Safer than stocks
    3. ETFs….Basket” of many stocks. Buy NGX 30 ETF = own 30 biggest companies at once

Who uses it…..Retirement, children’s university, building wealth in 10 years
    Risk…..Medium-High……Return….. High

    2. How Does It Actually Work in Nigeria?

    1. Open Account….. Open a CSCS Account with a stockbroker. Example: Stanbic IBTC, Meristem, ARM. This is like your “bank account” for stocks
    2. Fund Account…. Transfer money from your bank to broker
    3. Buy Assets….. Tell broker…Buy me ₦50k of GSK” or “Buy ₦100k of Stanbic MMF
    |4. Earn….Stocks…..Get dividends yearly + price can rise. MMF: Interest daily. Bonds: Interest every 6 months
    5. Sell/Withdraw….Stocks: T+2 days to get cash. MMF: T+1 day

Regulators…SEC protects you. NGX is where trading happens. CSCS holds your shares safely.

    3. How to Build Wealth for Your Children – The 10-Year Plan

The goal…Start small, be consistent, let compounding do the work

    The “Children Wealth Bucket” Strategy

    1. Foundation….Money Marke…MMF like Stanbic, AIICO, OWealth … Safe….For school fees in 2-5 years
    2. Growth Engine …..Capital Market…..NGX Stocks + ETFs ….Beats inflation…For university in 10-15 yrs NB, MTNN, NGX30 ETF
    3. Backup……FG Bonds + Skills….Bonds are safe. Skills ….future earning power

    The Magic of Starting Now
If you invest ₦50,000/month @ 18% average return for 15 years
    50,000 ×12 × 15 = ₦9M
    With compounding = ₦25M – ₦30M

That can pay 2 children through university

    3 Rules for Kids’ Money
    1. Start early… ₦10k/month at age 1 is better than ₦100k/month at age 10
    2. Be consistent….Automate it. Debit order on the 1st
    3. Don’t touch it ….This is not for NEPA or food. This is “Do Not Touch Until 18”

    4. First 3 Steps for a Total Beginner in Nigeria

    1. Step 1: Emergency MMF
Put 3-6 months expenses in Stanbic IBTC MMF or OWealth first. This is your safety net.

    2. Step 2: Open CSCS + Broker Account
Go to Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers, ARM, or Meristem. It’s free. Takes 3 days. You’ll need NIN, BVN, Passport

    3 Mistakes to Avoid
    1. Chasing “Double your money” Ponzi… If it’s not on NGX or CBN-licensed, run
    2. Putting all money in one stock… Spread it: 4-5 stocks + MMF + Bond
    3. Selling when market falls…Capital market rewards people who wait 5-10 years

    Bottom Line
    Money Market ….. Protect money
    Capital Market …..Grow money
Your Children ……Use both. Money Market for short term needs…..Capital Market for long term dreams

NOTE: teach your children to have this mindset of investing also when they come to an age.

    I hope this helps.

Supporting family without killing your own future..... In simple English let me explain... 1. The 3-Bucket Rule for Family Support This protects you AND helps them 1. YOU First .... Supporting family without killing your own future…..
In simple English let me explain…

    1. The 3-Bucket Rule for Family Support
This protects you AND helps them

    1. YOU First …. Savings, Investing, MMF, Skills..
What ever you think that will bring cash flow for you…
    2. FAMILY SUPPORT …fixed monthly support, not random → Set amount to parents/siblings ..
    3. YOUR LIVING… Rent, Food, Transport, Fun …

    Rules to Avoid “Financial Bleeding

    Rule 1: Fix the Amount……

Why: Random requests destroy your budget. Predictable support helps them plan too.

Rule 2: Invest in “Productive Help” Not Just “Consumption Help…..
Consumption…Paying NEPA bill, food, daily upkeep forever ….
Productive…Paying for skill, business capital, land, health insurance for the family

Example….: Instead of ₦20k monthly food money, do ₦100k once to buy mama a freezer for frozen food business. It pays her back.

Rule 3: Never Go Into Debt to Support
If you don’t have it, you can’t give it.
No loans, no credit cards, no dipping into emergency fund.

    Rule 4: Communicate Boundaries Early…

This stops guilt + emergency calls at 11pm.

Rule 5: Build Your Escape Velocity

Your goal is to get rich enough that 200k/monthly is nothing to you.
    That means…skills + Investing + Side Hustle…..MUST continue.
    NOTE
If you pause your future to support now, you’ll both be stuck in 10 years.

    Bottom Line…..
    Support with structure, not emotion….
Helping them stand and Protect your future so you can help more later.

Guilt will tell you to give everything. Strategy tells you to give sustainably.

    I hope this helps……
