Can I use an online-generated Taxpayer ID to file taxes with FIRS or LIRS in Lagos without issues?

Is it true that Taxpayer IDs generated only through the online system have not yet been fully integrated into the Lagos State system and may not be effective at this time. Or is there a way you can make it effective and integrated into the Lagos state system for you to file your tax annual return without any problems.

    Short Answer:

No — it is NOT true that Taxpayer IDs generated online are ineffective in Lagos State.

However, some online-generated Tax IDs may need activation or proper registration before you can file tax returns smoothly.

    Let me explain clearly 👇

🧾 The Truth About Online-Generated Tax IDs (Lagos State)

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) officially allows Taxpayer IDs to be created online through their e-Tax portal.

    According to LIRS:

You can create a Taxpayer ID online

It is sent via email or SMS

You can then use it to file taxes online

This means: ✅ Online-generated Tax IDs are valid

✅ They are recognized by Lagos State

✅ They can be used for annual tax filing

⚠️ Why Some People Say Online TIN Is Not Working

    This confusion usually happens because:

    1. Incomplete Registration

    Some people:

    Generate TIN online

    But do not complete profile

Or do not assign tax office

Result: 👉 The TIN exists but not fully activated

    2. Not Linked to Lagos State Residency

Lagos State taxes based on residency, not origin.

    If your TIN:

    Was created under another state

    Or under federal system

You may need migration to Lagos State system

✅ How To Make Your Online Tax ID Fully Effective (Important)

To make sure your online-generated TIN works perfectly:

    Step-by-Step Fix

    Go to LIRS eTax portal

    Login with your TIN

    Complete profile details:

    Address

    Occupation

    Income type

    Confirm your tax office (Lagos)

    Save and submit

After that: 👉 Your TIN becomes fully active

🟢 Good News (Recent Update 2026)

Lagos State now encourages electronic filing only, and the eTax platform is the official filing method.

    This means:

Online TIN is now even more important

Manual systems are being phased out

My Practical Advice (Based on Your Situation)

You are asking a very smart question (especially since you’re actively filing taxes lately).

    Here is what I recommend:

✔ If you already generated online TIN → Don’t panic

✔ Just login and complete profile

    ✔ Confirm Lagos State assignment

It is a common misconception that online-generated Tax IDs are “ineffective.” In reality, they are the only acceptable way to file in Lagos today, as the state has fully transitioned to a digital-first system.

The reason people struggle isn’t that the ID is invalid; it’s usually because the account hasn’t been activated or linked to a specific tax station.

The Truth About Your Online Tax ID
Lagos State (LIRS) now operates almost exclusively through the eTax portal. If you generated your ID online:

    • It is valid: It is a recognized legal identifier.
    • It is integrated: The system is designed to catch your data immediately.
    • It is required: Manual filings are being phased out in favor of this electronic method.

How to Make Your ID “Effective” for Filing
If your ID isn’t allowing you to file, it’s likely “dormant.” Here is the 3-step fix to integrate it perfectly:

    1. Complete Your Profile: Log in to https://etax.lirs.net/ . Most “ineffective” IDs are simply missing a house address, a profile picture, or an updated phone number. The system won’t let you file until your profile is 100% complete.
    2. Assign a Tax Station: You must select a specific Tax Office (usually the one closest to where you live in Lagos) within the portal settings. This “activates” your ID within that specific jurisdiction.
    3. Validate with NIN/BVN: Ensure your National Identification Number (NIN) or BVN is correctly linked. As of 2026, Nigeria has harmonized these systems; if your NIN isn’t linked, your Tax ID may remain “unverified.”

A Note on “Federal vs. State” IDs
If you generated a TIN via the Federal (FIRS) portal, it may not automatically show up on the Lagos (LIRS) portal. While they are being harmonized, you may still need to “Create New Taxpayer ID” on the LIRS eTax site specifically to ensure you are registered as a Lagos resident.

The Bottom Line: Don’t ignore an online ID. Instead, log in, finish the registration form, and select your tax station. Once that’s done, you can download your Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) directly from your couch.

Are you trying to file for the 2025/2026 assessment year specifically, or are you just trying to get your ID ready for future use?

    Goodluck!
