Can I Use the Same CSCS and CHN Number When Opening a Second Brokerage Account in Nigeria?

Good day Sir,

I just opened a second brokerage account with a new firm and I’m doing KYC now. I told them not to create a new CSCS & CHN.

But I read online that CHN is unique, but you need a new CSCS number for each firm. Please is this true? Or can I use my existing CSCS number?

Ah, my dear, I understand your confusion. Let me explain in a way that even Mama Ngozi would grasp easily.

    Simple Explanation:

    – Your CSCS number is like your fingerprint in the Nigerian stock market.

    – Your CHN number is unique to each stockbroking firm.

    How it Works:

    – When you open a new brokerage account with a different firm, they usually assign you a new CSCS account number.

    – This is because each CSCS number is linked to a specific brokerage firm.

    Benefits:

    – Having a different CSCS number for each brokerage account helps to keep your investments separate and organized.

    – It also allows for easier tracking of your holdings with different firms.

    Risks:

    – Using the wrong CSCS number for a particular brokerage account can lead to confusion in tracking your investments.

    – It’s essential to ensure that each account has the correct CSCS number to avoid any mix-ups.

    Real-life Nigerian Example:

    – Imagine you have different bank accounts with different banks. Each account has a unique account number, similar to how each brokerage account has a unique CSCS number.

    Common Mistakes:

    – Some people mistakenly try to use the same CSCS number for multiple brokerage accounts, which can cause issues in the future.

    Practical Steps to Get Started:

    – Since you’ve already asked the new firm not to create a new CSCS number, clarify with them if it’s possible to use your existing CSCS number for the new account.

    – If not, they will likely guide you on the process of obtaining a new CSCS number for the new account.

    Short Summary:

    – In summary, while your CHN number is unique to each brokerage firm, it’s typical to have a different CSCS number for each brokerage account you open to keep your investments organized.

Now, my dear, do you understand the difference between CSCS and CHN numbers for brokerage accounts? How can having separate CSCS numbers benefit an investor?

The information you read is only partly correct.
Here’s how it works in the Nigerian capital market:
CHN (Clearing House Number) is unique to each investor. You should normally have only one CHN throughout your lifetime. It serves as your unique investor ID.
CSCS account number is linked to the brokerage relationship. If you open an account with another broker, they may open another CSCS account for you under the same CHN, depending on their onboarding process and CSCS requirements. This is why some investors have multiple CSCS accounts but a single CHN.
So, if you’ve told the new broker not to create a new CHN, that is generally the right instruction.
    Regarding your existing CSCS number:
Some brokers can link your new brokerage account to your existing CSCS/CHN.
Others prefer to create a new CSCS account under your existing CHN and then use inter-member transfers when needed.
If a duplicate CHN is created by mistake, CSCS provides a process for CHN consolidation/merging.
Given what I know from our previous discussions, you’ve had issues before with multiple brokerage platforms and CHN/CSCS records. To avoid future dividend and transfer problems, I recommend that you:
Give the new broker your existing CHN.
Ask them to search and link your existing CSCS records before creating anything new.
Request written confirmation of the CHN and CSCS details they will use before your KYC is completed.

I understand that when you open a second brokerage account with a new firm and you’re undergoing the KYC process, you want to know if you can use the same CSCS and CHN number or if you need a new one. Let’s break this down.

Your Client Securities Account Number (CSCS) is unique to each brokerage firm. So, when you open a new account with a different firm, you typically need a new CSCS number specific to that firm. This number helps in tracking your holdings and transactions with that particular broker. It’s like having a different ID card for each company you work for.

As for the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) Holders Identification Number (CHN), it is indeed unique to each investor and does not change regardless of the brokerage firm. Your CHN is like your universal ID in the Nigerian capital market, linking all your investments across different firms. It helps maintain a comprehensive record of your holdings.

Therefore, while you can keep your existing CHN with the new brokerage account, you will likely require a new CSCS number as it’s specific to each brokerage firm. This setup helps ensure proper record-keeping and management of your investments across different brokers.

During the KYC process, the brokerage firm will guide you on the steps to follow to link your existing CHN to the new account and acquire a new CSCS for that account. It’s essential to adhere to these procedures to maintain accurate records and comply with regulatory requirements within the Nigerian financial system.

If you have any more questions or need further clarification, please feel free to ask. It’s important to ensure you understand the process clearly before proceeding with your investments.
