Start by checking your name on the SEC unclaimed dividend portal. If the shares are traced, contact the company’s registrar and complete your e-dividend mandate. They can help trace the old dividends and process the claim.

If you bought shares in 2008 and have not been receiving dividends, the dividends may still be unclaimed. You can check your name through the SEC’s unclaimed-dividend search system and then complete the required e-dividend process.

    3 Simple Steps

    1. Search for Your Name
Go to the SEC Unclaimed Dividend Search Portal and search using your name. It can show the companies and registrars connected to your unclaimed dividends.

    2. Contact the Registrar or Your Bank
Once you identify the registrar, obtain and complete the registrar’s e-dividend mandate form. You can submit it through your bank or directly to the registrar.

    3. Get Your Past and Future Dividends Paid Directly
After your account is properly mandated, eligible unclaimed dividends can be paid into your bank account, and future dividends can also be paid electronically.

Important: Don’t assume that because the shares were bought in 2008, the money is automatically lost. The SEC has clarified that shareholders can continue to claim eligible unclaimed dividends, including amounts transferred to the relevant trust arrangements.

Good Morning. Yes, it is possible to recover outstanding dividends from shares purchased years ago, even if they have not been received since 2008.

The first step is to check whether the shareholder has unclaimed dividends with the SEC’s official Unclaimed Dividends Search Portal.

After that, the shareholder can complete the appropriate e-Dividend mandate form and submit it through their bank or the Registrar so that the outstanding and future dividends can be paid directly into their bank account.
I suppose there are still procedures for identifying the shares using available ownership details and supporting documents.

If you bought Nigerian shares in 2008 and have not received dividends since then, you should actively try to recover them. The fact that the shares are old does not automatically mean the money is lost.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) currently provides a process for checking and recovering unclaimed dividends.
    SEC Nigeria +1
    What you should do
    1. Search your name on the SEC unclaimed-dividend portal
    SEC Unclaimed Dividend Search Portal
Enter your first and last name. The system can show companies/shares associated with unmandated dividend accounts.
    ePortal
    2. Identify the Registrar
The search result should indicate the Registrar responsible for the shares/dividends.
For example, depending on the company, the Registrar might be Africa Prudential, First Registrars, CardinalStone Registrars, Apel, Meristem, etc.
    3. Register for e-Dividend
This is very important. Your dividends can then be paid directly into your bank account rather than relying on old physical dividend warrants.
SEC says investors can now use its revamped e-Dividend Mandate Management System, including a self-service option, or approach their bank/Registrar.
    SEC Nigeria
You can also obtain the appropriate Registrar’s e-Dividend form from SEC.
    SEC Nigeria
    4. Ask the Registrar to check ALL outstanding dividends
Don’t simply ask, “Do I have dividend?”
    Tell them:
“I bought shares in this company around 2008 and have not received my dividends. I want a complete statement of all outstanding/unclaimed dividends attached to my shareholding.”
They should investigate the shareholder account and tell you what is outstanding.
What if you no longer have your share certificate?
    Don’t panic.
If you have any old documents—such as:
    share certificate
    allotment letter
    payment receipt
    old dividend warrant
    CSCS statement
    CHN
    old broker statement
bank records showing the share purchase
    take them with you.
SEC specifically says investors from the 2004–2010 period who need to identify old shareholdings can present valid documents proving ownership to their Registrar, stockbroker or bank.
    SEC Nigeria
There is an important point about your 2008 dividends
Because you purchased around 2008, don’t assume that dividends are automatically forfeited because they are old.
In a 2025 circular, SEC clarified the treatment of unclaimed dividends and stated that, pending operationalisation of the Unclaimed Funds Trust Fund, public companies and Registrars are to continue honouring qualifying requests for payment.
    SEC Nigeria
So it is worth pursuing the claim.
