This is one of the most important investing questions — and you’re asking the right thing. 📈
I’ll break it into simple rules professionals actually use.
    1. How To Know a Good Stock
A good stock usually has these 5 qualities:
    1. Strong Company (Not Just Price)
    Look for companies that:
    Make consistent profits
    Have strong business model
    Are leaders in their industry
    Examples:
    Dangote Cement (dominates cement)
    MTN Nigeria (dominates telecom)
    Apple Inc. (strong global brand)
    These are quality stocks.
    2. Growing Revenue & Profit
    Ask:
Is the company making more money every year?
    Is profit increasing?
    If YES → Good sign
    3. Dividend History (Very Important for You)
Since you’re interested in dividends, check:
Does the company pay dividends regularly?
    Do they increase dividends?
    Example:
Guaranty Trust Holding Company (steady dividend)
    Zenith Bank (consistent dividend)
    4. Low Debt
    Companies with:
    Too much loan = risky
    Moderate debt = safer
    5. Industry Strength
    Buy companies in strong sectors:
    Best sectors currently:
    Banking
    Telecom
    Oil & Gas
    Consumer goods
    2. When To Buy a Stock
This is where many people make mistakes.
    Best Time To Buy
    Buy when:
    Price drops temporarily
    Company still strong
    Market panic (temporary)
    This is called:
    👉 “Buy the dip”
    3. Is It Advisable To Buy When Stock Is Red?
Yes — but only if it’s a good stock.
    Red means:
    Price is down
    Not necessarily bad
    Smart investors:
    Buy when red
    Sell when green
    Example:
    Good stock falls → Buy
    Bad stock falls → Avoid
    Example
    Good scenario:
    Dangote Cement drops 5%
    Business still strong
    👉 Good buying opportunity
    Bad scenario:
    Unknown company drops 20%
    Poor earnings
    👉 Avoid
    Golden Rule (Very Important)
    Don’t buy because:
    Everyone is buying
    Price is going up fast
    Buy because:
    Company is strong
    Price is reasonable
Simple Strategy You Can Start Using
    Use this 4-Step Rule:
Step 1 — Is company strong?
    Yes → continue
Step 2 — Does it pay dividend?
    Yes → continue
Step 3 — Is price currently red?
Yes → good time to buy
    Step 4 — Buy gradually
    Don’t buy all at once
    Pro Tip (Very Powerful)
    Use Gradual Buying
    Example:
    You want to invest ₦100,000
    Don’t buy once:
    Buy:
    ₦30,000 today
    ₦30,000 if it drops
    ₦40,000 later
    This reduces risk.
