How Can I Invest ₦30,000 in a Money Market Fund as a Student?

I’m a student with 30k saved from my allowance. My friend said I should put it in MMF instead of leaving it in my savings account that gives me almost nothing. Is MMF really safe for small money like mine? Which one is best?

MMF (Money Mutual Fund) is good for capital preservation and for capital increase.

Now the beautiful part is, you can see the growth of you money via the App you are using to invest for the MMF.

Why we encourage MMF is, the intrest rate they pay is better than that of the bank saving account.

And beautiful enough you can withdraw it whenever you want to after the initial 30days withholding limits.

Now let’s make a little calculation.
If you put say 30,000 for 1 year with the intrest rate of 15%.. Guess how much.

    Finial balance is 415,520.51
    Breakdown.
    Total money of 30,000 *12= 390,000
    Total intrest = 25,520.51

Total =390,000+25,520.51=415,520.51 (I used the calculator in FOKONA.

So you see, in normal bank saving, you cannot get up to 10,000 for a year.

    Go for MMF.

Have you ever been to the market, where Mama Ngozi sells her fresh tomatoes? Imagine you kept your ₦30,000 in your pocket, but your friend says, “Why not put it in Money Market Fund (MMF) instead of leaving it in your piggy bank?” Now you’re wondering if MMF is a safe place for your small money compared to your regular savings account. Let’s break it down.

Here’s the gist: MMF is like a big, safe box where different people put their small-small money together. It’s managed by clever people who know how to make the money grow. They put the money in short-term investments like Treasury Bills, Commercial Papers, and other safe things to earn more than your regular bank savings.

Now, let’s talk safety: MMFs are like the Mama Ngozi of the financial world – they play safe. The people managing the box make sure your money doesn’t go to places where it can get lost. They aim to protect your money and give you some profit too.

So, is it safe for your small money? Well, MMFs are generally considered safe havens for small investors like you. They try to minimize risks and aim to give you a little more bang for your buck compared to your usual savings.

But here’s the catch: While MMFs try to be as safe as Mama Ngozi’s tomatoes, they are not completely risk-free. As with any investment, there’s always a chance – though small – that something unexpected can happen.

Here’s the bottom line: Putting your ₦30,000 in an MMF can be a good move to make your money work harder than just lounging in your savings account, especially if you’re cool with a little more risk for a little more return.

Just think about it like Mama Ngozi saving her best tomatoes in a secure place, making sure they’re safe and sound until it’s time to sell and make some profit. So, if you want your money to hustle a bit, MMF might just be the African print dress your ₦30,000 needs!
