1. Research and Understand the Requirements:
– First, conduct thorough research on the regulatory body overseeing fund management licenses in Nigeria, which is typically the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Understand their specific requirements and regulations for obtaining such a license.

– Obtain relevant education and training in finance, investment management, and forex trading. Consider enrolling in courses or programs related to fund management and forex trading to build your knowledge and skills.
3. Gain Relevant Experience:
– It’s beneficial to have hands-on experience in the financial industry, particularly in fund management or forex trading. Consider working for a financial institution or investment firm to gain practical experience.
4. Prepare Business Plan:

If your goal is to legally manage investors’ money in Nigeria—for example, operating a hedge fund, discretionary portfolio management firm, or investment management company—there are two separate paths you should think about:
See lessBecoming licensed by the SEC as a Fund/Portfolio Manager.
Becoming a technically competent trader with recognised professional credentials.
1. SEC Fund/Portfolio Manager Licence
In Nigeria, fund and portfolio management is a regulated capital market activity. You cannot legally manage investments for the public without registration by the SEC.
The broad process is:
Step 1: Incorporate a company
Register a company with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Your company’s objects should include:
Fund management
Portfolio management
Investment management
Asset management
Step 2: Meet the minimum capital requirement
The SEC currently requires a minimum paid-up capital of ₦150 million for a Fund/Portfolio Manager, together with a Fidelity Insurance Bond covering at least 20% of the required capital.
Step 3: Recruit key personnel
The SEC requires at least three sponsored individuals, including:
Managing Director
Compliance Officer
Another qualified sponsored individual
These individuals must satisfy the SEC’s experience requirements.
Step 4: Prepare your documentation
This includes:
Business plan
Operations manual
Organisational structure
CAC documents
Audited accounts or statement of affairs
Shareholding information
Office setup
Company bank information
The SEC also conducts a physical inspection of the business premises.
Step 5: SEC application and examination
The sponsored individuals must:
Complete the prescribed SEC forms.
Undergo police clearance.
Attend the SEC pre-registration training and examination (where applicable).
Attend the Registration Interview Committee if required.
Step 6: Pay the prescribed fees
There are filing, processing, registration and sponsored-individual fees. The SEC updates these from time to time, so you should always use the latest fee schedule before applying.
2. Becoming a Technical Certified FX Trader
There is no single globally recognised licence called “Certified Forex Trader.”
Instead, professional traders usually build credibility through recognised qualifications.
Some respected certifications include:
Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) qualifications, especially International Introduction to Securities & Investment and related programmes.
Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA) – highly respected in investment management.
Financial Modeling Institute certifications for financial analysis.
Professional courses on technical analysis from recognised market education providers.
For someone specialising in FX trading, you should also become proficient with:
Price action
Market structure
Technical indicators
Risk management
Position sizing
Trading psychology
Macroeconomic analysis
These practical skills are just as important as any certificate.
My recommendation
If your long-term ambition is to build an asset management company or hedge fund in Nigeria, I would follow this roadmap:
Learn professional trading for 1–3 years.
Obtain recognised investment qualifications (such as CISI or CFA).
Build a verified trading track record.
Register an investment advisory or asset management business when you’re ready.
Apply for the SEC Fund/Portfolio Manager licence once you meet the capital, governance and personnel requirements.
That combination—strong trading ability, recognised qualifications, a documented performance history, and SEC authorisation—will give you far more credibility than relying on a trading certificate alone.
