Here’s a clear, practical breakdown of how CHN/CSCS linkage works in Nigeria, whether you need to “combine” it between brokers like Bamboo and InvestNaija, what you can actually do, and the steps + consequences of switching brokers or accounts.
🧠 Key Clarification — What Your CHN Actually Is
Your Clearing House Number (CHN) is your unique investor ID in the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) — Nigeria’s central securities depository. It ties your stock holdings to you across brokers and registrars.
Your CHN is NOT a brokerage account number.
It’s like your investment identity in the central database.
Every broker will create a CSCS account for you using your CHN (or generate a new one on first entry), but your holdings are registered at CSCS.
📌 Can You “Combine” CHN Between Bamboo and InvestNaija?
You cannot literally combine or merge CHNs in the sense of fusing two separate brokerage CSCS accounts into one in the Bamboo app or InvestNaija app. Instead:
✔️ If You Already Have a CHN (from InvestNaija)
You should use the same CHN with Bamboo when you create your Bamboo NGX brokerage account.
CSCS requires that you use the same CHN for all brokers you deal with after the first one.
Bamboo will link your CSCS/CHN to its brokerage account and credit your future purchases to the same CSCS investor record.
✔️ What It Means Practically
When you open an NGX brokerage account with Bamboo:
Provide your existing CHN to Bamboo during onboarding.
Bamboo will open its CSCS account for you under that CHN instead of creating a duplicate.
Some brokers ask you to fill in your CHN in the registration so they can use it.
If you don’t provide your CHN, Bamboo may generate a new CSCS account under its system — meaning two separate CSCS accounts (one at InvestNaija, one at Bamboo). You prefer one unified CHN so all holdings are visible under one identity.
📌 What About Delisting or “Moving” Stocks?
If you have actual shares already held via InvestNaija and want them in Bamboo:
Direct share transfer between brokers does NOT happen by app toggles.
At present (as with Bamboo), they don’t support direct share transfers from another broker into Bamboo’s trading interface.
Two possible paths:
📌 1. Sell on InvestNaija, Reinvest on Bamboo
You sell your InvestNaija shares on the stock market.
You transfer the proceeds to your bank and then fund Bamboo to buy identical stocks there.
Simple, but triggers trading fees and tax implications.
📌 2. Initiate a CSCS Inter‑Member Transfer
This is how you move your existing share holdings from one broker to another without selling — similar to changing broker relationships.
The new broker (Bamboo) must initiate an inter‑member transfer request with the old broker and CSCS.
You provide your CHN and proof of ownership; brokers handle the paperwork.
📌 However: Bamboo does not currently provide a direct inter‑broker transfer service for Nigerian stocks as part of its platform offering — so this option may not be available through their app today.
🧠 Steps to Carry Out a CHN Transfer (If Supported)
If Bamboo (or any broker) supports CSCS transfer:
Open and verify your Bamboo NGX brokerage account.
Provide your existing CHN upfront during onboarding to link the same CSCS identity.
Ask Bamboo support to initiate a CSCS inter‑member transfer for your shares held elsewhere.
Submit proof of ownership (contract notes or statements showing your holdings under your CHN).
The brokers submit transfer forms to CSCS for approval and execution.
– Process can take several days.
👉 CSCS rules explicitly allow investors to use the same CHN across brokers and move shares via inter‑member transfer if both brokers cooperate.
📌 Consequences & Things to Know
⚠️ 1. Possible Fees
Transfer forms and inter‑member transfers often carry administrative fees, set by CSCS and/or brokers.
There is usually a share transfer fee per security.
⚠️ 2. Timing & Delays
Inter‑member transfer can take anywhere from a few days to weeks, depending on broker responsiveness and CSCS processing.
⚠️ 3. Risk of Selling Instead of Transferring
If you choose to sell and repurchase:
You incur brokerage fees and possible tax/charges.
You risk buying back at a higher price if the market moves.
⚠️ 4. Broker Support Matters
Not all digital brokers support inter‑member transfer, even though CSCS and NSE rules allow it — so check with Bamboo support directly if this option is available.
📌 What To Do Next (Practical Checklist)
Locate your CHN from InvestNaija (in their profile or account docs).
Start the Bamboo NGX brokerage onboarding — enter your CHN when asked.
If there is no field for CHN, contact Bamboo support before completing the setup.
Ask Bamboo support:
“Can you link my existing CHN to my Bamboo CSCS account?”
“Can I transfer my shares from InvestNaija to Bamboo using inter‑member transfer?”
Decide whether to transfer stocks directly (if supported) or sell and reinvest.
Summary
Goal
Possible?
Notes
Combine CHN between brokers
✔️
Use same CHN across brokers
Delist CHN from InvestNaija
❌
CHN is your central identity; doesn’t get “delisted”
Transfer shares to Bamboo
⚠️
Requires inter‑member transfer — not built into Bamboo currently
Sell and rebuy in Bamboo
✔️
Simple but involves costs
