When analyzing a Nigerian stock, the first thing I would do is look at the company’s financial statements and use different financial ratios to understand how the company is performing..

For example, P/E ratio (Price-to-Earnings) tells us how much investors are paying for every ₦1 the company makes in profit. If a company has a P/E of 10, it means investors are paying ₦10 for every ₦1 of earnings.

Another one is ROE (Return on Equity). This tells us how well the company is using shareholders’ money to generate profit. For example, if the ROE is 20%, the company is generating ₦20 in profit for every ₦100 invested by shareholders.

We can also look at the Debt-to-Equity ratio. This helps us understand how much debt the company has compared with shareholders’ equity. If the company has very high debt, it may have more financial risk.

Profit margin is also important. For example, if a company makes ₦100 million in revenue and keeps ₦20 million as profit, its profit margin is 20%. This helps us see how profitable the business is.

For companies that pay dividends, I would also check the dividend yield to see how much dividend income the share provides relative to its current price.

But I wouldn’t make a decision based on just one ratio. I would also check the company’s revenue and profit growth, cash flow, debt levels, and annual reports. I would compare the company with other companies in the same industry and look at its performance over several years.

So basically, fundamental analysis is about looking at the company’s financial health and asking Is the company profitable, financially stable, growing, and capable of creating value for shareholders?
