An ESG Impact Fund is an investment fund that aims to generate financial returns while investing in activities or companies that meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives.

    In simple terms:

E — Environmental: areas such as clean energy, waste management, water, pollution reduction or climate-related solutions.

S — Social: areas such as employment, healthcare, education, inclusion or community development.

G — Governance: how responsibly and transparently companies are managed, including ethics, accountability and shareholder rights.

The important point is that ESG does not mean “guaranteed high returns.” The fund still carries investment risk, and different ESG funds can have very different strategies and portfolios. Investors should look at the fund’s investment objective, underlying assets, fees, past performance, risk level, liquidity and the credentials of the fund manager before investing.

For a Nigerian investor considering a specific ESG Impact Fund, I would also verify that the fund and its manager are properly registered/regulated by the SEC and read the fund’s official documents before putting money into it.

So the better question is not only “What returns does the ESG fund give?” but also “What exactly does this fund invest in, what impact is it trying to create, and what risks am I taking to pursue those returns?”
