Imagine spending all your savings on a car, only for an unexpected emergency to hit. Without extra cash, you might be forced to sell the car at a loss or go into debt just to cover basic living and maintenance costs.
you can go for a car if it’s for business purpose. Even if you are buying the car as a business asset to generate income, it is still risky to exhaust your entire savings as the business might not go as planned, so keeping an emergency fund intact is essential for long-term stability.

Financial security should almost always come first. A car is a depreciating asset—it loses value the moment you buy it and continuously drains money through maintenance, insurance, fuel, and registration. Financial security, on the other hand, provides stability, freedom, and a safety net that protects you from life’s unexpected expenses.

    The Financial Priority Hierarchy
Before buying a car—especially if it involves taking on high-interest debt—it is best to build a foundational level of financial security.

For me, financial security should come first. A car is useful, but if buying one wipes out your savings, it may not be worth it yet. I’d rather build a solid financial base first, then get the car when I can comfortably afford it.

Do you remember Aisha, the smart young woman from our community who wanted to buy a car to make moving around easier for her small business? Let’s talk about something crucial, my dear. Financial Security vs. Owning a Car.

Imagine this: Mr. Emeka needed a car, so he went ahead to buy one. He felt happy driving around but soon realized his savings were shrinking like harmattan-dried corn under the scorching sun. Now, let’s address your concern:

Should Financial Security Come First Before a Car?: Yes, my dear. Before rushing to buy a car, take a moment to think about your financial situation. Financial security is like the meat in the pot of soup – very important. You see, having savings and money set aside for emergencies is like having a strong pillar that holds up a house. Without it, everything can come crashing down like a pack of poorly stacked cards!

But Why Is Financial Security More Valuable Now?: Well, let’s look at it like this: Imagine owning a car without savings – that’s like having a phone with no airtime to make calls. You need to be able to handle unexpected expenses like hospital bills, school fees or repairs without shaking like a leaf in harmattan. Financial security gives you peace of mind, my dear.

So, my dear, in this life race, financial security should be your strong shoe before the beautiful hat of owning a car. Make sure your foundation is solid before adding the beautiful curtains. After all, you can’t dance at a naming ceremony without good legs to move to the music, can you?

Remember, Mama Ngozi may sell tomatoes, but she knows the value of a strong financial foundation. Let’s build up those savings before zooming down the road in that shiny new car, my dear. Now you see, financial security is truly the “pounded yam” that goes well with the “okra soup” of life’s expenses.
