Why Did My Money Market Fund Returns Drop in Nigeria?

I began my money market fund investments in December, 2025. As at March, 2026 the total gain in my Money Market Fund investment was over #30,000.00 however, same was unexplainably reduced to about #6,000.00. And I wasn’t paid a dime from my total gain when I withdrew all my investment. I didn’t make any gain in my Money Market Fund investment I started in December, 2025.
I have pulled out my investment from Investnaija, now I’m discouraged from investing on money market fund.
If this issue is not addressed by Investnaija and my over #30,000.00 total gain is not paid to me, I may take out legal action against them.
It’s unfortunate

This situation is frustrating, but what you described usually has a technical explanation — and in most cases, it’s not that the money disappeared, but how Money Market Funds calculate returns.
Let’s break it down carefully 👇
    First — Important Clarification
    You’re investing through:
    InvestNaija
But InvestNaija is NOT the fund manager.
    They only act as platform/intermediary.
The actual money is managed by fund managers like:
    Chapel hill denham
    ARM Investment Managers
    Zedcrest Capital
    Stanbic IBTC Asset Management
So your complaint must go beyond InvestNaija.
Most Likely Reasons Your ₦30,000 Dropped to ₦6,000
    1. “Projected Gain” vs “Actual Gain” (Most Likely Reason)
    Many platforms show:
    Estimated returns
    Accrued returns
    Unrealized returns
    These are not final gains.
Money market funds calculate daily returns based on:
    Treasury bills rate
    Interest rate changes
    Liquidity changes
If interest rates fall, returns drop immediately.
    This may cause:
    ₦30,000 estimated
    Later adjusted to ₦6,000 actual
This is common in Nigerian Money Market Funds.
    2. You May Have Withdrawn Before Accrual Date
    Some funds:
    Accrue daily
    But pay monthly / weekly
If you withdraw before payout date, you may only receive:
    Principal
    Very small interest
    3. Platform Display Error (Also Common)
    Sometimes:
    App shows inflated gain
    System recalculates later
    Adjusted downward
This is not uncommon on investment apps.
    4. Interest Rate Crash (This Happened Early 2026)
    In early 2026:
    Treasury bill rates dropped
    Money market yields reduced
That caused lower returns across funds.
    Important Question
    Did you withdraw:
    Before month end?
    Before dividend distribution?
Or suddenly after checking the ₦30k?
    That detail matters a lot.
What You Should Do Now (Important)
    Step 1 — Request Statement
    Ask for:
    Full transaction statement
    Daily NAV report
    Interest accrual breakdown
    Send request to:
    InvestNaija support
    Fund manager directly
Step 2 — Ask These Specific Questions
    Send them this:
    What was my entry date?
    What was my exit date?
    What was my daily yield?
    What was my accrued interest?
Why did my gain reduce from ₦30k to ₦6k?
    Should You Take Legal Action?
    Not yet.
    Do this first:
    Request full statement
    Wait 3–5 working days
    Escalate to fund manager
    Then escalate to regulator
    Final Escalation (If Necessary)
    If unresolved, contact:
Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria (SEC)
    They regulate:
    Mutual funds
    Money market funds
    Investment platforms
    My Honest View
You likely did not lose money.
    Most likely:
    App showed estimated gains
    Actual interest was smaller
    Withdrawal timing affected payout
Since you’re already learning investments seriously, don’t get discouraged.
    Money market funds are still:
    Low risk
    Better than bank savings
    Good for short term funds
    One last thing:
    Tell me:
    Which Money Market Fund exactly?
    How much did you invest?
Exact period (Dec — when in March?)
I’ll calculate what your expected return should be.
